Does nursing prevent pregnancy?

I recently had my first baby, and I'm currently breastfeeding exclusively. My grandmother told me that as long as I'm nursing, I won't get pregnant again, but my friends are saying otherwise. How effective is breastfeeding as a method to prevent another pregnancy?

Listen to me, don't rely solely on breastfeeding to avoid pregnancy. While exclusive breastfeeding can delay your cycle, it is not a 100% safe method. Please protect yourself and use a proper backup contraceptive so you don't have to worry.

My wife and I learned this during our routine health checkups after our first child. The doctor told us that hormonal changes from nursing are very unpredictable, just like blood pressure. You need proper planning and lifestyle stability rather than guessing.

Yaar, please don't stress too much about this, but definitely don't trust the old myths! Nursing only works under very specific conditions, like if your baby is under 6 months and not eating solids yet. Just use a regular condom to be safe and enjoy your baby time.

I had my kids back-to-back because I thought nursing was enough protection! It only works if you are exclusively feeding day and night with zero formula. Honestly, save yourself the surprise and talk to your gynac about breastfeeding-safe mini pills.

I am currently nursing my 4-month-old and my doctor was very clear that lactation amenorrhea isn't foolproof. The moment you introduce a pacifier or baby sleeps longer at night, the protection drops. It's much easier to just use protection than to worry every month.

Haha, if nursing was a perfect contraceptive, half of India's siblings wouldn't exist! Don't play Russian roulette with your hormones, guys. Buy a pack of condoms and sleep a little easier—if the baby let's you sleep, that is!

In our family, elders often say that as long as you feed the baby, you won't get pregnant. But our family doctor explained that ovulation can happen even before you get your first period after delivery. It is always better to trust medical science for family planning.

I panicked so badly when I missed my date even though I was nursing 24/7. Luckily it was just my body taking time to regulate, but that scare taught me a lesson. It's totally normal to feel confused, but starting a reliable contraceptive method is the best way to relax.

Back in our days, many mothers believed this and ended up with unexpected pregnancies very quickly. Raising one baby is hard enough, so don't leave things to chance. Go and see your doctor for proper advice, beta.

I know how overwhelming it is when you are already dealing with postpartum exhaustion and then have this constant fear of an unplanned pregnancy. It is totally okay to feel anxious. Just talking to a doctor about a safe birth control option gave me so much peace of mind.

Totally agree with others here. It is definitely not a reliable method, so please use contraceptive protection.

For me, my period didn't return for almost 10 months while I was nursing. However, my friend who was also exclusively breastfeeding got pregnant when her baby was just 5 months old. It really varies from person to person.
