Does not sleeping cause weight gain?

I've been working night shifts for the past few months, and my sleep schedule is completely messed up. I've also noticed I've gained some weight despite not changing my diet much. Could my lack of proper sleep be the reason for this weight gain?

When I consulted a specialist at Apollo, he explained that sleep deprivation messes with ghrelin and leptin, the hormones that control hunger. This often leads to overeating and weight gain. It is best to ask your physician for a proper metabolic assessment if you have chronic sleep issues.

Drinking warm chamomile tea or warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg before bed can really help you sleep better naturally. However, if your insomnia is severe or you are gaining weight very rapidly without any reason, please consult a doctor for a checkup.

With my thyroid issues, poor sleep directly wrecks my metabolism and causes fluid retention. It is so important to keep your hormone levels checked regularly. Make sure you get your thyroid and blood sugar tested if you are facing both sleep and weight issues.

Lack of sleep increases cortisol levels, which can lead to abdominal fat accumulation. However, because chronic sleep issues can also point to sleep apnea or hormonal disorders, you should get a proper diagnosis from a healthcare provider.
