Does mirena cause weight gain?

After getting the Mirena, I've seen my weight slowly increase, even though my diet and activity levels haven't changed much. My friends told me it's a common side effect. Does Mirena actually cause weight gain?

Arey, at this age, even looking at a gulab jamun makes me gain weight! But seriously, Mirena can cause some minor water retention initially which feels like weight gain. It usually settles down after a few months.

If you are noticing a continuous increase in weight, please get your thyroid levels checked too. Sometimes we blame the birth control, but an underlying thyroid issue could be the actual culprit.

Some temporary bloating can happen due to the progesterone hormone. I found that doing light cardio and a 30-minute brisk walk daily really helped manage any fluid retention and kept my energy levels high.

Beta, try reducing salt in your food to help with the bloating naturally. But if you feel sudden, heavy leg swelling or severe pain, please go see your gynecologist immediately.

I got so scared when the scale went up by 2 kgs in the first month of getting Mirena. My doctor explained it was just temporary water weight. Sure enough, by the fourth month, my weight went back to absolutely normal.
