Do not believe those random WhatsApp forwards claiming Metformin ruins your kidneys; that is complete nonsense. Metformin does not cause kidney damage, but it is cleared through the kidneys. So if your kidneys are already weak, the medicine can build up, which is why doctors check your levels first.
As someone who manages both high BP and sugar, I know how important kidney health is. Metformin is actually kidney-safe for most, but you must do your routine kidney function tests (KFT) every six months. Keeping your blood pressure and sugar in control is what actually protects your kidneys.

I have been managing type 2 diabetes for eight years now. The truth is, high uncontrolled blood sugar is what actually damages your kidneys, not Metformin. Just keep your HbA1c under control, stay hydrated, and get your creatinine levels tested once or twice a year to be absolutely sure.
I had the exact same worry when my doctor prescribed it to me! But she explained that Metformin actually helps protect our organs by keeping our blood sugar stable. Just make sure to drink plenty of water and get your routine blood tests done to stay on the safe side.

I literally spend hours searching about long-term side effects of my medicines because I get so anxious about organ health. But every doctor I asked assured me that Metformin is very safe for the kidneys as long as your baseline kidney function is normal. Don't worry, just keep up with your regular doctor visits.
