Does menstruation cause weight gain?

Every month, a few days before my period starts, I feel so bloated and the scale shows a couple of extra kilos. It goes away after a few days, but it's still frustrating. Does menstruation actually cause temporary weight gain, or is it just water retention?

I completely understand why you are asking this, because even I used to panic seeing the scale go up suddenly every month. It really feels like you did something wrong but actually it is just temporary water weight. Once your period ends, it goes away on its own so please don't stress.

Yes, water retention and hormonal shifts are very common during this time. But if you notice that the weight gain is sudden and doesn't go away after your cycle, it is better to get your thyroid and hormone levels checked. Always best to let a doctor rule out any other issues.

Yes, it is very normal to feel a bit heavier or bloated right before and during your period. Don't worry too much about the numbers right now. Just rest well and take care of your health.

I asked my doctor about this last year because I was suddenly gaining two kgs before my date. She told me that estrogen and progesterone make the body hold onto sodium, which causes water bloating. She also said it is not real fat, and it goes away by day three or four of your flow.

It is just your body holding onto water during this phase, very natural. I find that doing light stretching and practicing basic pranayama like Anulom Vilom really helps with the premenstrual bloating. Try to reduce salty food and keep yourself well hydrated.

I literally go crazy checking my weight before my cycle starts, it always goes up by 1-2 kilos. I read so much online trying to find out if it is permanent fat, but honestly it's just bloating and water. It is scary to watch the scale change, but it really is just our hormones acting up.

Hormonally speaking, water retention is very typical in the luteal phase due to progesterone changes. It is usually temporary and resolves within a few days. However, if this is causing you significant distress, consulting your gynecologist is the best way to understand your body's specific patterns.
