Does lying down after eating cause weight gain?

I often feel a bit lazy after lunch and tend to lie down for a short nap. My mother always warns me that lying down right after eating will make me put on weight. Is there any truth to this belief, or is it just an old wives' tale?

Directly it doesn't instantly pack on fat, but it slows down your digestion completely. With our hectic desk jobs, going straight to bed after dinner is a recipe for acidity and bloating. I try to walk for at least 10 minutes inside the house before sitting down.

If lying down caused instant weight gain, I would have crossed 150 kilos by now! But honestly, it just causes terrible heartburn and makes you feel heavy. Better to sit upright for a while unless you want to wake up with acid in your throat.

I can barely keep my eyes open after a heavy lunch, so lying down is my default mode. It might not make you fat overnight, but the lethargy and bloating make you feel like a giant balloon. Sadly, we have to fight the urge to nap immediately.

Yes, totally agree with others. Try staying upright or sitting in Vajrasana for 10-15 minutes after meals, it really helps with digestion.

If you are feeling extremely sleepy and heavy after every meal to the point where you must lie down, please get your blood sugar and thyroid levels checked. Sometimes it is not just normal laziness, so safe to consult a doctor.

For diabetic folks like us, lying down right after meals is not good because a light walk actually helps control post-meal blood sugar spikes. Even a gentle 15-minute stroll inside the house makes a big difference. Don't go straight to sleep.

It mostly just causes bad acidity and bloating rather than actual fat. Try to stay upright for at least 45 minutes.

Weight gain is ultimately about calories in versus calories out, so lying down itself won't make you gain fat. However, it severely impacts digestion and can cause GERD. It is best to maintain a gap of 2 hours between eating and sleeping as advised by doctors.

My physician at Apollo told me that lying down right after eating relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, which leads to acid reflux, not direct fat gain. If you are struggling with weight and digestion issues, consult a general physician for a proper plan.

No need to overcomplicate this. Just make it a habit to do a slow walk around the colony or even in your living room for 10 minutes after dinner. Avoid drinking too much water right after food, and don't go to bed immediately.
