Does itching your scalp cause hair loss?

I have an extremely itchy scalp, which sometimes gets really bad. I'm worried that all the scratching might be damaging my hair follicles, does itching your scalp cause hair loss?

I was actually reading up on this yesterday because my scalp has been super itchy lately. Apparently, the physical friction of scratching can break the hair strands and even damage the hair follicles over time, leading to temporary thinning. It's better to find out what's causing the itch rather than just scratching.

For me, high blood sugar always triggers yeast overgrowth on the skin, including the scalp, which leads to intense itching and subsequent hair fall. I had to strictly monitor my diet and carbs to bring the itchiness down. If you have chronic itching, checking your overall systemic health might be a good idea.

Oh God, I used to worry about this constantly because I scratch my head when I'm stressed! I read that severe scratching can cause micro-scars on the scalp, which stops new hair from growing there. Please try not to scratch, maybe wear a silk cap at night or keep your hands busy so you don't do it unconsciously.

I went to a specialist at Apollo for my scalp itching and hair loss last month. The doctor explained that itching itself is just a symptom of inflammation, which is the real cause of hair fall. Don't rely on random internet advice—just book an appointment with a proper dermatologist to get your scalp examined.

It actually does, yaar. If you scratch constantly, you're literally pulling out weak hair from the roots. I had this issue during monsoon because of the humidity and sweating. Best is to use a mild soothing lotion or shampoo instead of scratching your head like a monkey all day.
