Does hydrocortisone cause weight gain?

My doctor put me on hydrocortisone recently for an inflammatory condition, and I'm a bit concerned about side effects. I've heard some steroids can make you gain weight. Is weight gain a common side effect of hydrocortisone?

I panicked thinking a small tube of hydrocortisone cream would make me fat. My doctor clarified that only oral steroid tablets cause weight gain, not the normal skin creams, which was a huge relief.

I used the cream for an insect bite for a week and experienced absolutely no change in my weight. It seems to stay very localized on the skin.

If you are taking oral steroids, they can increase blood pressure and water retention. Keep a regular check on your BP and talk to your doctor about lifestyle modifications.

My doctor just prescribed hydrocortisone tablets for my allergy. Do these tablets always cause weight gain, or does it only happen if you take them for a very long time?

Topical hydrocortisone has negligible systemic absorption, so it won't affect weight. However, systemic oral or injectable forms can increase appetite and cause fluid retention, so consult your doctor regarding managing side effects.
