Does hrt cause weight gain?

My friend told me that HRT can make you gain weight, and I'm already struggling with my metabolism after menopause. Is it true that HRT typically causes weight gain?

From what I have seen over the years in this group, weight gain is a very common worry with HRT. Often, it is actually the menopause or aging process itself that slows down metabolism, not just the therapy. My advice is to focus on a balanced lifestyle and talk to your doctor about finding the right hormone balance.

I completely understand how frustrating it is when you feel like your body is changing and you have no control over the scale. I struggled so much emotionally when I felt bloated after starting my therapy. Please don't be too hard on yourself, it takes some time for the body to adjust to new hormone levels.

As someone who works closely with medications, I can tell you that HRT can sometimes cause fluid retention, which feels like sudden weight gain. It doesn't necessarily mean you are gaining fat. Keep an eye on your salt intake and definitely mention this to your doctor so they can review your prescription if needed.

I was actually researching this same topic for my aunt who is about to start HRT next month. From what I’m reading online, some people do report bloating and a little weight gain initially, while others say it actually helped them manage their weight better. It seems to vary a lot from person to person.

Hormones can definitely influence where your body stores fat and how much water you hold. But honestly, keeping your daily movement high and hitting your protein targets can make a huge difference in managing any potential weight changes. Focus on strength training if your doctor allows it, it keeps the metabolism firing!

I can only speak from my own personal experience, but I did notice some bloating and gained about two kilos when I first started HRT. However, after about four months, my body seemed to adjust and the extra fluid weight went away on its own. Everyone's journey is different though.

Any sudden weight gain after starting a new hormone therapy should be discussed with your physician to rule out thyroid issues or high blood pressure. While mild bloating is common, it is always safest to get it checked out. Never make changes to your dose on your own.

I am so tired today I can barely keep my eyes open, but let me tell you, managing weight during any hormone therapy is a whole task. Yes, bloating is real and it makes you feel like you've gained ten pounds overnight. Just drink your water, avoid late-night snacks like I fail to do, and give it some time.
