Does hormonal birth control cause weight gain?

My gynecologist suggested I start hormonal birth control for PCOS, but I'm worried about side effects. I've heard from many friends that it can cause weight gain. Is it true that hormonal birth control makes you gain weight?

My jeans definitely got a little tighter after I went on the pill, but I also blame my love for midnight Maggi! It mostly just increases your appetite and water retention. Just keep an eye on what you snack on and you will be absolutely fine.

Yes, I gained about 4 kgs of water weight when I first started the pill. My tip is to reduce your daily sodium intake and drink lots of water to beat the bloating. Don't worry, it usually stabilizes after 3 months once your body adjusts to the hormones.

Before you switch pills thinking they cause weight gain, do a basic hormone panel and thyroid test. It costs around 1200 rupees but saves you from wasting money on trying different expensive birth control brands. Keep a practical track of your diet and calories first.

My mother suggested drinking warm ginger tea daily to help with the pill-induced bloating, which does offer some mild relief. But my gynecologist explained that modern low-dose pills rarely cause permanent fat gain, mostly just temporary water weight. I trust her advice and stayed active.

I totally get it, seeing the scale go up when you are trying your best is so frustrating. Some birth control pills definitely cause fluid retention and make you feel constantly hungry. You are not crazy for feeling this way, please be kind to yourself.

Hey, don't stress too much about this. A small amount of weight fluctuation is very common when you start hormonal birth control, and it's nothing to panic about. Just focus on eating healthy, home-cooked meals, and if it bothers you too much, we can talk to your gynac about switching to a different type.

For mild bloating, I drink fennel or jeera water in the morning, which helps keep the stomach light. However, if you notice very sudden weight gain, severe headaches, or leg swelling, please see a doctor immediately. Do not ignore major changes in your body.
