Does high cortisol cause weight gain?

I've read online that high cortisol levels can make you gain weight, especially around the belly. I've been struggling with stubborn weight gain and stress lately. Could high cortisol be the reason?

My endocrinologist explained that high cortisol, which is the stress hormone, actively signals the body to store visceral fat, especially around the abdomen. It also increases cravings for sugary and fatty foods. He advised focusing on stress reduction techniques alongside physical exercise to lower cortisol levels.

I struggled with stubborn belly fat for years due to high work stress and elevated cortisol. Real change happened only when I started prioritizing 8 hours of sleep, stopped intense late-night workouts, and practiced mindful meditation. You must calm your nervous system first to lose that stress weight.

Haan, bilkul sahi baat hai. Cortisol toh stress hormone hai, jab aap din bhar chinta karenge toh body fat store karne lagti hai, khaas karke pet ke paas. Isliye thoda chill kiya karo aur meditation shuru karo, stress kam hoga toh weight bhi kam hoga na?

In my younger days, I used to run around endlessly with family and work stress, and my weight kept increasing. Once I retired and started taking life calmly, my stress levels and weight went down automatically. Don't let life's worries ruin your health, dear.

It is true that stress leads to weight gain. I found that drinking warm ashwagandha milk at night and Chamomile tea helps calm down the mind and reduce cortisol. Try incorporating these gentle habits along with a balanced diet to help your body relax.

Totally agree. Managing your sleep schedule is the single most effective way to lower cortisol and stop that unexplained weight gain.

High cortisol levels also raise blood sugar, which then causes insulin spikes and weight gain. As a diabetic, I have to be doubly careful about stress. I manage this by eating low-glycemic foods and avoiding stressful arguments, especially around meal times.

Yes, chronic high cortisol levels definitely lead to weight gain, particularly around the belly and face, due to increased fat storage and appetite.
