Does high blood pressure medication cause weight gain?

I started taking medication for my high blood pressure a few months ago, and I've noticed I'm gaining weight, especially around my stomach. Is it possible that this medication is causing me to put on weight?

When my doctor started my BP medicine, I noticed a slight increase on the scale. But since I also have diabetes, I had to be very careful not to blame the medicine entirely and start eating poorly. I cut down on direct carbs and salt, which kept both my weight and sugar in perfect check.

I stopped taking my beta-blocker medicine because I read online that it causes weight gain, and I deeply regret it. My blood pressure shot up and I ended up in the hospital with severe kidney strain. Please never stop your medicines without consulting your doctor; weight can be managed, organ damage cannot.

Yes, certain BP medicines like beta-blockers can slow down your metabolism and cause some fluid retention, leading to weight gain. However, please consult your doctor instead of self-managing this, as suddenly changing medication can cause a dangerous rebound spike in blood pressure.

Yes, some specific high blood pressure medications, especially beta-blockers, are known to cause mild weight gain or water retention in some patients.

I have been on BP medicines for five years now and did experience a 3 kg gain initially. My cardiologist explained that some pills slow you down, making you less active. I adjusted by doing regular morning walks and getting my kidney profile checked every six months to make sure everything was fine.

I noticed some bloating and weight gain after starting my BP pills. To counter this, I started drinking barley water and reduced my pickle intake, which helped a lot with the water retention. But please keep taking your pills as prescribed by the doctor, home remedies are only to support, not replace them.

At my age, I have seen many friends complain about weight gain from BP medicines. But let me tell you, keeping your heart safe is far more important than a few extra kilos. Keep eating light ghar ka khana and walk daily, and your body will adapt to the medicine slowly.

I was actually researching this for my mother because she felt she was putting on weight after starting her new pills. It seems like fluid retention is a common side effect of some calcium channel blockers. It is good to know we are not the only ones noticing this!

Don't stress too much about the weight gain right now. Your blood pressure being in a safe zone is the main priority. If the weight increase is too sudden, just talk to your doctor gently and they can easily adjust the medicine or suggest a mild diuretic to help with the water bloating.

My dad faced this when he started his new BP prescription last year. He felt lazy and gained a bit of weight, so we talked to his doctor who swapped the medicine to a different class that didn't affect his energy levels. If it is bothering you, just ask your doc to change the salt.
