Does having longer hair cause hair loss?

Trying to grow my hair really long, like down to my waist, but some older relatives tell me that very long hair tends to fall out more because of the weight. Is it true that having longer hair can actually cause more hair loss?

In our family, elders always say that long hair doesn't fall on its own, it is only the weak roots that cause issues. However, if you are experiencing sudden patchiness or heavy thinning, it is best to visit a dermatologist. They can check if it is some vitamin deficiency or scalp issue.

My daughter also had beautiful long hair, but it started falling out in clumps last year. We realized she was tying it way too tightly in high ponytails for school, which was pulling the roots. Once we switched to loose braids and a better diet, the hair fall stopped completely.

No, long hair itself doesn't cause hair loss. It just looks like a lot more hair is falling because of the length when you detangle.

Please don't just blame the length of your hair and ignore the shedding. I kept thinking my hair fall was normal because of my length, but by the time I went to a doctor, I had lost a huge chunk of hair due to severe iron deficiency. Get a basic blood test done before it gets worse.

From what I see in the clinic, long hair only causes hair loss if you apply too much tension on the roots, which is called traction alopecia. Otherwise, hair growth cycles are completely independent of length. Make sure your scalp is clean and dandruff-free, as that actually damages the roots.

I have PCOS and suffered from heavy hair fall, and I initially thought it was because of my long hair. But hair length alone doesn't cause hair loss, it is often internal hormonal issues or thyroid changes. It might be helpful to consult a doctor just to rule out any underlying health concerns.

I went through this exact same worry last month when my hair grew past my shoulders. I was panicking seeing my comb, but my doctor cleared it up saying we naturally lose 50 to 100 strands a day. I started eating better and stopped using harsh shampoos, and my shedding is back to normal now.

Actually long hair doesn't cause hair fall, yaar. It's just that long strands make the hairball in the drain look huge and scary! Unless you are pulling your hair too tight, it is usually just normal daily shedding or maybe some stress.
