Does hair oil cause dandruff?

My friends always tell me to oil my hair regularly for strength and shine, but sometimes after oiling, my scalp feels a bit itchy and I see more flakes. I'm wondering if too much hair oil can actually cause dandruff instead of helping.

Dealing with PCOS has made my scalp super sensitive and oily, and heavy oiling definitely makes my dandruff worse. I have learned to be very careful with hair products. Maybe try avoiding heavy coconut oil for a couple of weeks and see if your scalp feels any better.

Actually, hair oiling doesn't directly cause dandruff, but if you leave heavy oils on an already oily scalp, it can feed the yeast that causes flaking. Dermatologists generally recommend applying oil only for an hour or two before washing it off. It's always best to consult a skin specialist if the issue persists.

Bro, I used to plaster my hair with mustard oil overnight thinking it would make it strong, but it gave me massive pimples and dandruff. Stopped doing that, started washing regularly, and the dandruff literally vanished in a week.

In our home, putting warm coconut oil daily was the solution for everything. But when my dandruff got really bad, a doctor explained that the oil was actually trapping the dirt and sweat. Now I only oil my hair right before washing, and it has helped a lot.

Keep it simple. If you have a sticky scalp, don't leave oil overnight because it just gathers dust and leads to itching. Wash your hair twice a week with a normal anti-dandruff shampoo and apply oil only on the dry ends, not the scalp.
