Does food pass through the liver?

My little cousin asked me where food goes after we eat, and I explained digestion. Then she asked if it passes through the liver, and I wasn't entirely sure. Could someone please clarify if food directly passes through the liver?

No, food doesn't directly pass through the liver. It stays in your food pipe, stomach, and intestines, while the liver only filters the nutrients absorbed from them.

God save us if whole rotis started passing through the liver! The poor organ already has enough work filtering all the oily stuff we eat. It only processes the liquid nutrients after digestion is done.

Actually, digestion happens in the gut, and then the nutrients go to the liver through the blood. That is why keeping a clean, plant-based diet helps because the liver doesn't have to work extra hard to detoxify heavy, fatty things.

I used to think this too in biology class! But food only goes through your digestive tract, not the liver itself. The liver just acts like a busy customs officer checking all the nutrients that enter the bloodstream.

The liver just processes the absorbed nutrients from your food, it doesn't hold the physical food itself. If you want to keep your liver functioning great, daily brisk walks are amazing, just ask your doc if you are fit to start.

No, it doesn't pass through directly. But whatever we eat definitely affects it, just like how high salt and oil ruined my BP and fatty liver markers. Better to get regular lipid and liver checkups done to stay safe.

My doctor at Apollo explained that the liver only filters blood coming from the digestive tract, not the food itself. If you are having pain or digestion issues, please consult a gastroenterologist and ask them to explain the symptoms clearly.
