Does fever come with food poisoning?

I think I might have food poisoning after eating out last night. I have nausea and stomach cramps, but no fever yet. Does fever usually come with food poisoning, or can you have it without one?

Yes, it can. When you ingest bad bacteria, your immune system fires up a fever to kill off the pathogens. Since your body loses a lot of nutrients through vomiting and sweat, focus heavily on hydration with ORS and coconut water, and skip your workouts entirely until you recover.

Hey, don't worry too much. A mild fever with food poisoning just means your body is fighting off the bad food. Keep taking small sips of water so you don't get dehydrated, and rest up. If the fever gets really high or you can't keep liquids down, we will get you to a doctor, okay?

I literally just recovered from this last week after eating some street food. Along with loose motions, I had a 100.5 fever and terrible body ache. My doc said it's very common with bacterial food poisoning. I took prescribed antibiotics and plenty of ORS, and felt better in 3 days.

It definitely can happen. Before running to expensive private hospitals for tests, try to manage with ORS sachets from a local pharmacy which cost barely 20 rupees, and take basic paracetamol for the fever. If it doesn't settle in 24 hours, then go to a local government dispensary for a cheap consult.

Yes, fever is a common defense mechanism during food poisoning. I had it once and was bedridden for two days. Once the fever broke and my stomach settled, I started with very light 10-minute evening walks just to get some circulation going, but only after my doctor said it was okay.

Please be very careful with this. I once ignored a high fever and stomach cramps thinking it was simple food poisoning, but it turned out to be a severe salmonella infection that dehydrated me completely and affected my kidneys. If you have high fever, blood in stool, or constant vomiting, please go to a hospital immediately.

Oh god, did you eat something bad outside? Yes, a fever can totally happen with food poisoning, so don't stress too much, your body is just kicking those bad bugs out. Just lie down, watch your favorite show, and keep sipping electral. Call me if you need anything!

I completely understand how scary it feels to suddenly get a fever when you are already dealing with a bad stomach. Your mind immediately goes to the worst case scenario. Just breathe—it is a very normal response to food poisoning, but definitely call your doctor if the anxiety or physical symptoms get too intense.
