Does epidural steroid injection cause weight gain?

I've been getting epidural steroid injections for my chronic back pain. Lately, I feel like I'm gaining weight, especially around my midsection. Is it possible that these injections are causing me to gain weight?

Yes, some temporary water retention can happen after steroid injections. It usually goes away in a few weeks.

I felt a bit bloated and puffy for a couple of weeks after my injection, but it wasn't actual fat gain. Just keep drinking plenty of water and eat light, low-sodium meals. It settles down soon, don't worry!

I completely understand why you are anxious about this, weight gain is the last thing you want when you are already dealing with back pain. It is a very valid concern! Usually, the steroid dose is localized so any water retention is temporary and should clear up.

It can cause a tiny bit of temporary bloating because of the steroid, but it is not permanent. Please take rest and let your body heal first. Take care.

Since I have high blood pressure, my doctor kept a close watch on my fluid levels after the injection. Steroids can cause some sodium retention which might show on the scale. Make sure you keep tracking your BP and reduce extra salt in your diet.
