Does eczema get worse before it gets better?

I started a new treatment for my eczema, and initially, my skin looks a bit worse, redder and more irritated. My doctor said this can happen. Does eczema sometimes get worse before it starts getting better with treatment?

When you start a new treatment or ointment, it can sometimes cause temporary redness or mild irritation before showing positive results. Give any new routine at least two weeks to work. If the irritation is severe, stop immediately and contact your doctor.

Yes, my dear, it often feels like it's getting worse, especially when the old skin is peeling off to make way for new skin. Just make sure you aren't scratching the dry flakes, and keep the area clean. It's just a phase of healing.

Just like managing high blood pressure, skin healing also requires regular monitoring and lifestyle adjustments. When you start a new routine, there might be a brief adjustment period where the skin looks dry. Keep a close eye on it and do regular follow-ups with your specialist.

I have noticed this too during my flare-ups. Keeping the skin moist during the peeling stage really helps speed up the healing process.

Honestly, eczema healing is like a bad joke—it gets super itchy and ugly just when you think it is finally going away. I lose so much sleep over this scratching cycle. It does get better eventually, but the process is very annoying!

Actually, my skin is looking so red and angry right now after starting the doctor's cream. Did anyone else face this? I am so worried that it is reacting badly or making my eczema permanently worse.

During the healing phase, the skin gets very dry and looks worse. You can apply a little bit of pure ghee or coconut oil to soothe the dryness, as our elders used to do. But do not apply anything if there are open cuts or wounds.

Sometimes a mild flare happens when your skin is clearing out toxins, and aloe vera gel can help cool it down. However, if you see pus, severe swelling, or feel a burning sensation, don't wait. See a doctor immediately as it could be an infection.
