Does dutasteride cause weight gain?

My father is taking dutasteride for his enlarged prostate, and he seems to have put on some weight recently. He's concerned it might be related to the medication. Does dutasteride cause weight gain in men?

Dutasteride can sometimes alter your hormone levels slightly, which might lead to mild water retention or fat distribution changes. If your doctor allows, make sure you do regular strength training and brisk walking. Staying physically active is the best way to prevent any sluggishness.

Let's be clear: dutasteride works on DHT levels, and some men do report a slight increase in body fat or bloating. It is not some magical pill that makes you obese overnight, though. Keep your diet clean, avoid junk, and you will easily maintain your weight.

Some patients on dutasteride do notice mild weight changes or swelling due to fluid retention because of the hormonal shifts. It is quite manageable if you reduce your salt intake and stay hydrated. Do let your doctor know if you feel sudden, heavy swelling in your ankles.

I have been taking this medicine for my hair thinning for the last eight months. Initially, I felt a bit bloated and gained around two kilos, but it stabilized once I cut down on my sodium intake. Don't worry, it is completely manageable.

My brother has been on this medication for a year and hasn't experienced any weight gain. Just monitor your eating habits and you should be fine.
