Does drinking lots of water prevent kidney stones?

My father suffered from kidney stones a few years back, and the doctor told him to drink plenty of water to prevent recurrence. I'm worried about getting them too. Is drinking a lot of water truly effective in preventing kidney stones?

Yes, hydration is the absolute key to keeping your kidneys clear. Along with water, managing your salt intake is very important, especially if you have high BP. Make sure to get regular kidney function tests done if you have chronic health issues.

I love spicy food and outside meals, which can sometimes lead to stones due to high sodium. To balance my food cravings, I make sure to drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily. It literally dilutes all the heavy stuff we eat!

My cousin recently got a very painful 6mm kidney stone and I've been terrified ever since. I am drinking water constantly now, but I still feel slight back twinges. Does anyone else get super anxious about every little ache in their lower back?

Beta, abundant water is the best natural medicine for the kidneys. In our village, we also recommend drinking barley water (jau ka paani) or coconut water once a week to keep the bladder clean. It gently flushes out any small crystals before they grow into stones.

Drinking water is literally free compared to the heavy cost of a kidney stone ultrasound and surgery which can easily cross 50,000 rupees. I set a simple alarm on my phone to drink a glass every hour. It is a very practical way to save both your health and your wallet.
