Does drinking alcohol cause joint pain?

After some social gatherings where I've had a few drinks, I often wake up with dull aches in my knees or sometimes my fingers. My mother says it's just old age catching up, but I'm only in my late 30s. Can alcohol directly cause joint pain like this?

I struggle with chronic inflammation due to PCOS, and I've noticed that alcohol triggers mild joint aches for me. It might be similar for others as alcohol is highly inflammatory. I am not a doctor, but maybe try avoiding drinks for two weeks to see if it makes a difference.

Look, alcohol causes dehydration and increases uric acid in your body, which directly leads to joint pain. If your knees or ankles are hurting after a night of drinking, it is a clear warning from your body. Cut down on the alcohol and drink lots of water.

Oh God, yes! I used to get terrible knee pains after having wine and got so scared thinking it was something serious. Dehydration makes our joints lose lubrication, which causes this pain. Please make sure you drink plenty of water and don't panic, but do check with a doc if it continues.

I totally get it, waking up with aching joints after a relaxing evening is so frustrating. Alcohol really dehydrates our muscle tissues and joints, causing that deep, annoying ache. Try staying very hydrated next time, or better yet, limit the drinks to see if the pain stops.

Please be very careful with this. I ignored my post-drinking joint pain for months until it turned out to be severe gouty arthritis, which damaged my joints. Do not ignore these pains; go to a doctor and get your uric acid levels and inflammatory markers checked immediately.

I used to suffer from severe ankle stiffness and pain every Sunday morning after weekend drinking. Once I stopped alcohol completely and started taking hydration seriously, the pain totally disappeared. My tip is to cut out beer first, as it drastically increases uric acid.
