Does dexamethasone cause weight gain?

I was prescribed dexamethasone for an inflammatory condition a few weeks ago. I've noticed a significant increase in my weight since then. Is weight gain a common side effect of dexamethasone?

Dexamethasone is a strong steroid, and yes, it is very well-known for causing water retention and increased appetite, which leads to weight gain. I face similar metabolic struggles with my thyroid. Please ensure you do regular checkups and follow your doctor's instructions closely instead of stopping the medicine abruptly.

Yes, it absolutely does. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid, which alters how your body deposits fat and handles water. Most of this is fluid retention and increased hunger, which goes away gradually after the course is finished. Just take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Hey, don't stress too much about the weight gain right now. Steroids like dexamethasone are usually prescribed for important swelling or inflammatory issues, so finishing the course is vital. Once the doctor tapers your dose, the extra water weight will naturally drop off.

Yes, weight gain and a puffy face are very classic side effects of dexamethasone due to sodium retention and fat redistribution. Don't try any crash diets to fight it right now. Let your doctor manage your steroid tapering safely first.

I have been asked to start this medicine from next week and I am a bit scared about the weight changes. Does the puffiness go away quickly after stopping the pills? I would really appreciate if anyone who has taken it could share their experience.

My doctor explained that dexamethasone increases appetite and causes the body to hold onto extra water, especially around the face and abdomen. It's a temporary effect of the steroid therapy in most cases. Make sure to keep your salt intake low to help manage the swelling, and keep your doctor updated.
