Does depakote cause weight gain?

I started taking Depakote a few months ago, and since then I've noticed a significant increase in my weight, which is quite concerning. I'm trying to figure out if this weight gain is directly due to the medication or something else entirely. Does Depakote commonly cause weight gain?

My neurologist explained that Depakote can cause weight gain by changing your metabolic rate and significantly increasing cravings, especially for carbohydrates. He advised me to track my food intake closely and get regular thyroid and blood sugar tests, as these parameters can also be affected by the medication.

I was just reading up on this because my friend has been prescribed this medicine. From what I found, it seems weight gain is indeed one of the most common side effects of Depakote because it can increase your appetite. It is quite a worry for many people starting this treatment.

Yes, I gained about six kilos in the first few months of taking it because I felt hungry all the time. What worked for me was keeping healthy snacks like roasted chana and cucumber handy instead of reaching for chips. It is hard but totally manageable if you watch your portions!

Weight gain is a very well-documented side effect of Depakote, affecting a large number of patients. It usually happens gradually over the first year of treatment. I always suggest keeping a check on your weight weekly and discussing any sudden changes with your doctor so they can adjust the dosage if needed.

Yes, this medicine does increase your weight, but you don't need to join an expensive gym to manage it. Just make a habit of walking for forty-five minutes every evening and avoid eating fried food and sweets at night. Simple home-cooked meals will keep your weight under control.

Depakote does cause weight gain, which can be tough to handle with a busy office schedule. I recommend meal prepping on Sundays so you don't order junk food when the medication increases your appetite during work hours. If the weight gain is too rapid, schedule a quick call with your doc to discuss alternatives.
