Does cutting teeth cause fever?

My 8-month-old is very cranky, drooling a lot, and has a slight fever. Everyone says it's because he's cutting teeth. Does cutting teeth actually cause fever in babies, or should I be worried about something else?

Teething can raise body temperature slightly, but it shouldn't cause a high fever. Just like I track my thyroid symptoms carefully, you should monitor the baby's temperature and consult a pediatrician if it goes above 100 degrees.

My little nephew was so cranky and refused his favorite fruit purees when teething, and had a mild warm forehead. But a real, high fever is usually an infection, so keep offering cool cucumber slices to chew and see a doctor if it gets hot.

From what I have seen with family babies, teething might make them slightly warm because of gum inflammation, but it shouldn't cause a full-blown illness. It's always safer to check with a doctor to rule out any ear or stomach infections.

It can make the baby a little warm and fussy because of the discomfort. Just keep them comfortable, give them safe teething toys to chew, and consult your pediatrician if the fever persists.

Teething only causes a very mild rise in temperature. If the baby has a proper high fever, it is likely due to some other infection and needs a doctor.
