Does cradle cap cause hair loss?

My newborn has a bit of cradle cap, and I've noticed some hair coming off with the flakes when I gently comb his head. Is this normal? Does cradle cap actually cause hair loss in babies?

Cradle cap itself doesn't cause hair loss directly as it is just a build-up of natural oils on the scalp. However, if you vigorously scrub or pick at the crusts, that can pull the tiny hair shafts out. Just be very gentle and use a baby-safe tracking routine for scalp care.

Generally, cradle cap is a harmless condition that resolves on its own without causing permanent hair loss. If you notice patchy hair fall or red, inflamed skin underneath, it could be a sign of a secondary infection. In such cases, it is best to consult your pediatrician for a proper diagnosis.

Actually yaar, don't worry, it doesn't cause permanent hair loss. My sister's baby had it real bad, and we thought the hair would never grow back. But once the crusts cleared up with mild coconut oil, the hair came back perfectly fine.

Please be very careful with this. We tried to comb out my baby's cradle cap too hard and it got infected, which led to temporary hair loss in those spots. I highly recommend asking your doctor for a medicated baby shampoo instead of experimenting at home.

My pediatrician explained that cradle cap is just seborrheic dermatitis and the hair loss, if any, is only temporary because the hair follicles themselves are not damaged. She advised applying virgin coconut oil, waiting for 20 minutes, and then gently brushing with a soft baby brush during bath time.
