Does cortisol cause weight gain?

I've been struggling with unexplained weight gain despite eating healthy and exercising. My doctor mentioned cortisol as a possible factor. Does high cortisol cause weight gain?

Honestly, high cortisol from stress absolutely messes up your metabolism. I have noticed when I am super stressed, I get intense cravings for simple carbs and fried snacks, which always leads to weight gain. It is better to focus on clean, home-cooked meals and not blindly follow fad diets during stressful times.

Listen buddy, don't stress too much about cortisol levels because that stress itself will increase it even more! Yes, it can cause some belly fat and bloating, but it is super manageable. Just sleep on time, drink enough water, and chill out a bit. Everything will be fine, trust me.

Please be very careful with this. I ignored my rapid weight gain thinking it was just work stress, but my cortisol levels were dangerously high due to an underlying hormonal issue. I had to face quite a few health complications later. I highly recommend getting a proper blood test done and visiting an endocrinologist.

It definitely does because cortisol makes your body hold onto fat, especially around the midsection. But you can combat this by combining strength training with a clean high-protein diet. Just don't overtrain, as excessive workouts can raise cortisol even more. Keep it balanced.

I went through this exact same phase last year. My weight just wouldn't budge because of my crazy work stress. What actually helped me was setting a strict screen-time limit after 9 PM, doing deep breathing for 10 minutes daily, and walking. You have to actively lower your stress levels to see the scale drop.
