Does colestipol cause weight gain?

I started taking colestipol a few months ago for my heart condition. Since then, I've put on a little weight and I'm not sure why. Does colestipol cause weight gain?

Don't stress, colestipol is actually a bile acid sequestrant and isn't known to cause weight gain directly. Sometimes, just starting a new medication makes us anxious, which can change our eating habits. Take a deep breath, keep eating healthy, and you'll be just fine.

No, weight gain is not a typical side effect of colestipol. It usually doesn't affect your body weight directly.

I was on colestipol for a few months last year and was also terrified of gaining weight. Honestly, my weight stayed exactly the same throughout the course. Just make sure to drink plenty of water as it can cause a bit of constipation.

Colestipol works locally in your gut to bind bile acids, so it doesn't affect your metabolism in a way that causes weight gain. If you are seeing the scale go up, it might just be changes in your diet or water retention. Keep up with your workouts and watch your calorie intake.

While clinical studies do not list weight gain as a common side effect of colestipol, everyone's body chemistry is unique. If you notice rapid weight changes or bloating after starting it, please consult your doctor to rule out any thyroid or metabolic issues.
