Does cholecystectomy cause weight gain?

I had my gallbladder removed a few months ago, and since then, I've noticed that I've started gaining weight. I'm not sure if it's related to the surgery or something else. Is it common for cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) to cause weight gain?

I had my gallbladder removed two years ago. Personally, I did notice a gain of about 4-5 kg in the months following the surgery, mainly because my digestion changed and I couldn't process fats the same way. Everyone's body reacts differently though.

Post-surgery recovery can be slow, and if you gain weight, doctors might recommend thyroid or lipid profile tests which can add to your medical expenses. To avoid extra costs, it is best to manage your diet early by eating simple, home-cooked low-fat meals that don't strain your digestion.

After my gallbladder removal, I thought I could eat everything again without pain, which is probably why my weight shot up! The surgery itself doesn't magically add fat, but our appetite returns with a vengeance once the pain is gone. Keep an eye on those extra chapatis!

When I had my cholecystectomy at Manipal Hospital, my surgeon gave me a very clear diet chart for the first six months. They explained that weight fluctuations can happen due to metabolic changes. Please consult your surgical team or a clinical nutritionist to manage your post-op diet safely.

It is quite common to see some changes in weight after gallbladder removal as the body adjusts to digesting food without concentrated bile. Be gentle with yourself during recovery and focus on eating light meals. Things usually settle down with time.

After my surgery, I closely tracked my macro intake on my fitness app. Since the body can't store bile anymore, digesting large fat meals is harder, which can sometimes slow down your metabolism or cause bloating. Keeping daily fats under 40-50 grams helped me prevent any post-surgery weight gain.

The surgery itself doesn't cause weight gain; it's the fact that you can finally eat without severe gallbladder pain, leading to overeating. As long as you maintain a calorie deficit and do regular workouts, you won't gain any unwanted fat.
