Does carpal tunnel go away after pregnancy?

I'm 7 months pregnant, and my wrists and fingers have been tingling and numb, especially at night. My doctor said it might be carpal tunnel. Will this go away after I give birth, or will I have to deal with it long-term?

I totally get it, that tingling and numbness in the hands can make holding your newborn so difficult. The good news is that for most mothers, the fluid retention goes down post-delivery and the pain fades away. Just hang in there and rest your wrists as much as possible.

My wife tracked her symptoms on her health app during her third trimester, and her wrist mobility scores actually normalized about six weeks postpartum. The swelling drops as your hormones stabilize. Keep logging any severe pain, and if it doesn't reduce after a couple of months, check with your doctor.

I am in my second trimester and my wrists have just started hurting and feeling stiff in the mornings. Is it really true that it goes away on its own after delivery? Did anyone have to wear wrist splints to get relief during sleep?

Oh my god, I panicked so much thinking I had permanent nerve damage when my fingers went numb after birth! But my doctor told me it's just post-pregnancy fluid and completely normal. True to her word, the pain slowly faded away on its own within a month.

Honestly, yes, it usually goes away once the pregnancy swelling settles down. I had horrible wrist pain in my ninth month but it completely disappeared a few weeks after delivery. If it persists past two months, don't ignore it and get a nerve conduction test done.

During pregnancy, our body holds a lot of water which presses on the nerves in the wrist. Don't worry, once the baby is born, this extra water leaves the body. You can gently dip your hands in lukewarm water with a little salt for relief, but do not massage it hard.

It definitely improves once the body releases the excess fluid post-delivery. During my sister's pregnancy, gentle wrist rotations and basic micro-movements of the fingers helped her manage the stiffness. Regular deep breathing also helps calm the nervous system during recovery.
