Does carbamazepine cause weight gain?

I've been on carbamazepine for a few months now, and I feel like I've gained some weight. I eat healthy and try to stay active, so I'm wondering if the medicine is the cause. Is weight gain a known side effect of carbamazepine?

Yes, carbamazepine can cause weight gain for some people by slowing metabolism. If your doctor allows, starting a daily 45-minute brisk walk and light strength training can really help keep that weight under control.

I was on carbamazepine for a few months and actually gained around 4 kgs because my appetite went up. I had to strictly watch what I was eating to stop the weight from creeping up further.

Some weight gain is a known side effect of carbamazepine for many patients. Please try not to stress too much about it, and just discuss it gently with your doctor at your next appointment.

I was actually researching this same topic online because a family member might start carbamazepine soon. It seems quite common to see some weight changes, so it's good to be aware and prepare beforehand.

Honestly, this medicine makes me crave high-carb snacks so much! It definitely leads to weight gain if you give in to those extra food cravings, so keeping healthy munchies nearby is a lifesaver.
