Does bulimia cause hair loss?

I'm supporting a friend who's going through a really tough time with bulimia, and she's confided in me about some physical changes. One thing she mentioned was hair loss, which is really upsetting her. Does bulimia often cause hair loss as a side effect?

Beta, when you do not keep food in your body, your hair loses all its strength and starts falling out in clumps. I saw my niece struggle with this years ago, and her beautiful thick hair became so thin because of lack of nutrition. Once she got proper help and started eating well, her health and her hair both recovered completely. Please take care of yourself.

You will find a hundred different onion oils and hair vitamins online claiming to stop hair fall, but don't fall for them. Hair loss from bulimia is a deep internal issue due to severe nutritional deficiency and stress. You must consult a proper medical doctor and a therapist rather than wasting time and money on random internet hacks.

Yes yaar, it definitely does because your body is literally getting zero nutrition. If you keep purging, how will the hair get any vitamins to grow? Actually, it's a huge warning sign that the body is suffering internally. You really need to talk to a doctor and get some help, please don't ignore this.

Actually, yes, it does. My doctor explained that when the body is starved of nutrients due to purging, it enters a survival mode called telogen effluvium, where it shuts down non-essential functions like hair growth to save energy for vital organs. The lack of protein, zinc, and iron directly impacts hair follicles, making them weak and prone to falling out.

Our hair needs good fuel to shine, just like we need a hearty meal to feel happy! When you don't allow those essential proteins and fats to stay in your system, your hair is bound to suffer and fall out. Enjoying food and letting your body digest it is so important for keeping your hair strong and healthy.
