Does brushing hair help dandruff?

I've been struggling with dandruff for quite some time now, especially during the dry season. A friend told me that brushing hair regularly can help exfoliate the scalp and reduce flakes. Is there any truth to this advice, or should I stick to anti-dandruff shampoos only?

When I consulted a senior dermatologist at Fortis, he explained that brushing can help distribute natural scalp oils, but it won't cure dandruff which is often fungal or due to dry skin. He advised against harsh brushing as it can irritate the scalp further. It is best to consult a specialist for a proper medicated shampoo.

Brushing gently can help loosen the flakes, but it doesn't cure the root cause of dandruff. You will still need a proper anti-dandruff shampoo for real relief.

I read that brushing too hard can actually spread the fungus and make dandruff worse, which got me so worried. But then some people say gentle brushing helps the blood flow. I think using a very clean brush gently is okay, but please be careful not to scratch your scalp.

I have tried everything from neem paste to lemon juice over the years. Brushing only lifts the dead skin, but applying warm coconut oil with a few drops of tea tree oil before washing works much better to soothe the itchiness. Do it gently without scratching with your nails.

While brushing might help clear flakes temporarily, dandruff is often linked to internal heat or eating too many greasy, sugary foods. Keeping your diet clean, drinking lots of water, and eating cooling foods like curd will help your scalp health much more than just combing.

I used to just brush my hair vigorously to hide my dandruff flakes, but it irritated my scalp and caused a severe infection that took months to heal. Don't ignore a flaky scalp or try to manage it with just a comb. Go see a skin specialist before it gets worse.
