Does brushing hair cause hair loss?

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of hair in my brush after combing, especially when I brush vigorously. My parlour wali told me to be gentle, but then my hair gets tangled easily. Does brushing actually lead to more hair fall, or is it just normal shedding?

I totally get it, seeing so many strands of hair on your brush can be genuinely heartbreaking and makes you want to stop combing altogether. Brushing itself doesn't cause hair loss, it usually just removes the hair that had already naturally detached from the scalp. Try using a wide-toothed comb and be very gentle.

Hey, don't stress too much! We lose around 50 to 100 strands a day naturally, and brushing just gathers them up in one go, making it look like a lot. Just avoid brushing your hair when it is wet, because that is when it is weakest and prone to snapping.

Actually, I was reading up on this because I was facing the same issue. It turns out that aggressive brushing or using the wrong brush can cause hair breakage, but not actual hair fall from the roots. Normal, gentle brushing is actually good because it improves blood circulation in the scalp.

While regular brushing only clears out shed hair, sudden and excessive hair loss can be due to thyroid issues, nutritional deficiencies, or hormonal imbalances. If you feel you are losing clumps of hair, please get a blood test and consult a doctor instead of just changing brushes.

In my experience, hair health comes from within, not from how often you brush. When I improved my protein intake and started drinking enough water, my hair fall reduced significantly. Brushing only clears out the dead hair, so focus on your nutrition first.

I used to panic every morning looking at my hairbrush and thought I would go bald in a month. But my dermatologist reassured me that this is just normal daily shedding and completely healthy. Once I stopped stressing, I realized my hair volume was actually fine.

I used to cry in the bathroom looking at all the hair on the floor after brushing, it really affected my confidence. But I slowly realized that being gentle, using a wooden comb, and managing my stress was the key. You are not alone in this, please don't be too hard on yourself.
