Does breastfeeding reduce pregnancy?

I'm still breastfeeding my first child and we are thinking about trying for another. My friend told me that breastfeeding can actually prevent you from getting pregnant. Does breastfeeding reduce your chances of getting pregnant again?

It can delay your periods, but please don't rely on it as a contraceptive. My cousin got pregnant again within 4 months of delivery while breastfeeding. Use actual protection.

I used to panic thinking I might get pregnant again quickly since I didn't get my periods while nursing. My doctor reassured me that while exclusive breastfeeding acts as a natural delay, it is not 100% foolproof. Use a backup method to be safe.

Do not trust anyone who says breastfeeding is a safe contraceptive method. It only works under very specific conditions (exclusive feeding, no periods, under 6 months), and even then, failures are very common. Verify with your doctor.

It can delay ovulation, but it is not a reliable birth control method. Please use proper protection.

Breastfeeding naturally produces hormones that slow down the return of your reproductive cycle, allowing the mother's body to heal. However, it is not a guaranteed shield. Treat your body gently and consult your doctor for safe family planning.
