Does birth control without estrogen cause weight gain?

I've been advised to use an estrogen-free birth control method due to some health concerns. However, I'm really worried about potential weight gain, as I've heard that some pills can cause it. Does birth control without estrogen also lead to weight gain?

I am actually thinking of starting these pills soon but I am a bit scared about this too. My friend told me only estrogen pills cause bloating, but is that really true? Please let me know if anyone has used the mini-pill for more than six months.

From what I have seen with clients, progesterone-only options can sometimes increase your appetite slightly, which might lead to weight gain if you aren't tracking. If you keep your daily steps high and eat enough protein, you can easily manage it. It's mostly about managing those extra cravings.

Honestly, it varies so much from person to person! 😊 I was on progesterone-only pills for a year and didn't gain any weight at all, maybe just a little water retention in the first month. Just drink plenty of water and don't stress about it too much!

My daughter was prescribed these non-estrogen pills last year for her painful periods and we had the exact same worry. She did gain about two kilos initially, but with regular walks and home food, she came back to her normal weight. Don't worry, just keep an eye on her diet and make sure she stays active.

At my age, even drinking water feels like it adds two kilos, so blaming only the pill is a bit unfair! Jokes aside, my wife used these and had no major weight issues. Just stay active and don't let the stress eat you up.

It usually does not cause significant weight gain. Just monitor your health for a couple of months and stay in touch with your doctor. Hope you find the right fit soon.

I have seen this question come up so many times in this group, and the general experience is that non-estrogen options like the mini-pill or hormonal IUD cause very minimal weight changes. If you do notice a couple of kilos extra, it is usually just water weight that settles down in three months. Always consult your gynaecologist if it keeps rising.

I totally get it, worrying about weight gain when starting any new medication is so stressful and exhausting. I had the same anxiety when my doctor put me on progesterone pills. Fortunately, it didn't change my weight, so try to take a deep breath and give your body some time to adjust.
