Does bcbs cover weight loss surgery?

My sister-in-law is considering weight loss surgery, and she has BCBS insurance. Does BCBS generally cover weight loss surgery procedures, or are they usually considered elective and not covered? She's trying to figure out the costs.

For severe diabetes and weight issues, BCBS often covers bariatric surgery because it helps control blood sugar. You must show a history of high HbA1c and failed diet attempts. Always consult your endocrinologist first to see if this is the right path for you.

I tried every home remedy, from methi water to ginger tea, but sometimes for extreme weight, surgery is the only medical solution. BCBS does cover it if your health is in danger. Don't feel bad about choosing surgery, it is a medical necessity for many.

My high BP was getting out of hand, so I looked into this. BCBS does cover weight loss surgery if you have co-morbidities like hypertension. Just make sure to get a complete cardiovascular clearance from your doctor before moving forward.

If you are considering surgery, remember that life after it requires a massive diet shift. BCBS usually covers it, but they often require you to meet with a nutritionist first. You'll have to be very disciplined with protein intake post-op.

Hey! My aunt had her gastric sleeve surgery covered by BCBS last year. They covered almost 80% of it, but she had to go through a six-month supervised weight loss program first. Start the process early because the prep work takes time.

Going for surgery means saying goodbye to large portions of our beloved street food, so think carefully! BCBS does cover it, but the lifestyle change is the real test. Make sure you are mentally ready for the strict diet changes afterwards.

Surgery is a major step for the body, so weigh all options carefully. BCBS may cover it, but please consult multiple senior doctors first. Along with medical help, keeping a simple, home-cooked diet is the ultimate way to maintain your health.

I was just reading about this online out of curiosity. It seems most BCBS plans have a specific 'Bariatric Benefits' section. You really have to read the fine print of your policy to see if your specific employer opted into that coverage.

I am looking into this for my mother. Is the approval process very stressful for older people? If anyone has gone through BCBS for bariatric surgery, could you please tell me how long the approval actually takes?

Hey, don't stress too much about the insurance stuff right now. Just focus on finding a really good surgeon first. Once you find the right doctor, their team usually handles all the annoying BCBS paperwork for you anyway.

Actually, it is a bit of a process, yaar. BCBS won't just say yes immediately. You have to submit tons of reports and show that your BMI is above 40. Talk to a hospital coordinator directly, they know how to handle these insurance guys.

Even if BCBS covers the surgery, physical activity is what keeps the weight off long-term. Post-surgery, you'll need to start with short, gentle walks as soon as your doctor allows. It really helps with recovery and building up your strength again.
