Does alcohol aggravate kidney stones?

My brother just had kidney stone surgery, and he's a regular drinker. The doctor advised him to cut down. Does alcohol genuinely aggravate kidney stones, or increase the chances of getting them again?

Yes, alcohol causes severe dehydration which directly increases the risk of stone formation. Drink plenty of water if you have a history of stones.

Hey, please be careful. Kidney stone pain can be absolutely unbearable, and alcohol only dehydrates your body, making it harder to flush those stones out. Skip the alcohol completely for now and focus on drinking lots of barley water.

I was reading about kidney health and found that alcohol increases uric acid in the blood, which can lead to uric acid stones. It is crazy how dehydration from drinking speeds up this painful process.

Yes, it absolutely aggravates them. Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it makes you urinate more and dehydrates your system quickly, which concentrates calcium and oxalate in your kidneys. Avoid alcohol and keep your fluid intake high.

In my fifty years, I have seen many friends land in the hospital with kidney pain after heavy weekend drinking. Alcohol deprives your kidneys of water, which makes the stones grow. Take my advice, drink fresh lemon water instead.
