Does a dexa scan show arthritis?

My doctor suggested I get a DEXA scan for my bone health. I also have some joint stiffness and pain, which I suspect might be early arthritis. Does a DEXA scan show arthritis, or is it only for bone density?

I completely understand how stressful it is when your joints hurt and you are looking for answers. A DEXA scan actually measures bone density to check for osteoporosis, not arthritis. But don't worry, your doctor can easily recommend an X-ray or MRI to check for arthritis.

A DEXA scan is actually for checking bone strength and osteoporosis risk. For arthritis, doctors usually look at joint space using regular X-rays or sometimes blood tests. Wishing you a speedy recovery and happy health!

Take care of your health and try not to worry too much. The DEXA scan is just to see the density of your bones, but for arthritis, other tests are used. Keep a calm mind and discuss the options gently with your physician.

No, it doesn't. A DEXA scan checks for bone thinning (osteoporosis). If you suspect arthritis, don't waste time booking random scans; just schedule a quick consultation with a rheumatologist who will suggest the exact X-ray or blood tests needed.

Beta, I have had both joint pain and bone density tests. The DEXA scan was done to check how strong my bones are, but the doctor diagnosed my arthritis through a regular joint X-ray. Follow your doctor's guidance, they will suggest the correct test.
