Does a bone density test show arthritis?

My mother recently had a bone density test because of her age. She has some joint pain and was wondering if that test would also show if she has arthritis. Does a bone density test provide information about arthritis?

From what I understand, a bone density test (DEXA scan) is mainly used to check for osteoporosis and bone thinning, not arthritis. While they both affect bones and joints, arthritis usually needs X-rays or MRI scans to show joint wear and tear. I hope this helps, but please check with your doctor for the right test.

I know how stressful it is when you are in pain and trying to figure out which medical test does what. It can feel really overwhelming. Just know that a bone density test won't diagnose arthritis directly, so you might need to speak to your doctor about getting an X-ray instead.

I just got both tests done last month. My DEXA scan showed my bone density was perfectly fine, but my knee X-ray clearly showed mild osteoarthritis. So yes, they are completely different tests for different issues.

No, it doesn't show arthritis. Bone density test only measures calcium and bone strength to see if you have osteoporosis. If you have joint pain and suspect arthritis, you need to get X-rays or blood tests done. Go to a good orthopedist and let them decide.

Don't worry too much about the terminology. A bone density test is simple and painless, but its main job is checking bone strength. For arthritis, the doctor will look at joint space and cartilage, usually via standard X-rays. Just discuss your specific pain areas with the doctor and they will guide you.

My mother went through this recently! She had joint pain and thought a bone density test would show everything, but the doctor actually ordered a separate X-ray for her arthritis. The density test is just to see how strong your bones are, not if the joints are inflamed.

No, it doesn't show arthritis, it only checks for weak bones. Try to stay calm and visit your doctor, they will easily guide you to the correct test for your joint pain.
