Do you digest food when you sleep?

Often eating dinner quite late because of my work schedule, I then go straight to bed. I've heard that it's not good for digestion. Does our body actually digest food properly while we are sleeping, or does the process slow down a lot?

Yes, digestion happens but it slows down quite a bit when you sleep. I used to eat heavy meals right before sleeping, ignoring constant heartburn until it caused severe reflux and a damaged food pipe. Please get your eating schedule checked if you have sleeping issues.

Your metabolism and digestion do continue while you sleep, though at a much slower pace since the body's energy is focused on repair. Eating at least 2-3 hours before bedtime is highly recommended by doctors to prevent indigestion and sleep disruption. If you face chronic bloating, do consult a gastroenterologist.

Haan na, digestion toh chalu hi rehta hai par thoda slow ho jata hai jab hum sote hain. Isliye toh bolte hain ki dinner jaldi karna chahiye taaki pet pe load na aaye. Light khana khao aur ek ghante baad so jao, simple life!

Yes, digestion goes on but at a relaxed pace. That is why our elders always advised having a light dinner like khichdi or soup. It gives your stomach some rest and ensures you wake up feeling fresh and active instead of heavy.

Don't go by those random WhatsApp forwards saying your stomach stops working at night. Digestion is an involuntary process and it never stops, though it does slow down. If you have actual digestive issues, go see a proper doctor instead of relying on online theories.

I used to panic thinking my food was just sitting in my stomach rotting because I slept late. But my doc reassured me that our organs never fully shut down; they keep working. Just try not to sleep immediately after a heavy biryani, and you will be completely fine!
