Do steroids make your hair fall out?

After starting a course of steroids for an allergic reaction, I've noticed a significant increase in hair fall since then. I wanted to know if steroids commonly make your hair fall out. It's quite alarming to see.

I was reading up on this because my cousin was prescribed oral steroids for an allergy. It looks like anabolic steroids used for bodybuilding definitely cause hair loss, but medical corticosteroids usually don't unless used in high doses for a long time. It is quite interesting how different they are.

If you are noticing sudden hair fall after starting any steroid medication, please consult your prescribing doctor immediately. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly on your own, as that can be dangerous. Let the doctor evaluate if it's the medicine or some other deficiency.

Please try not to worry. Short-term medical steroids very rarely cause any hair issues, and even if there is slight shedding, it usually stops once the medicine is over. Take care and follow your doctor's plan.

I have been asked to take prednisone tablets for a skin rash, and I am very scared about losing my hair. Does anyone know if a short 5-day course can cause shedding? I would really appreciate some guidance on this.

Anabolic steroids used in gyms absolutely accelerate male pattern baldness due to DHT hormone spikes, which my fitness app's health log warns against. However, therapeutic medical steroids are totally different and won't ruin your hair in short courses. Track your stress levels too, as that often causes shedding.
