Do ssris cause weight gain?

My doctor prescribed SSRIs for my depression a few months ago, and I've steadily been gaining weight ever since. Trying to eat healthy and exercise, but nothing seems to help. Is this weight gain related to the medication?

Yes, they can affect metabolism and appetite. I use a calorie tracking app to monitor my food intake while on SSRIs, which helps me stay within limits. Definitely discuss this with your doctor so they can help you manage it safely.

I totally panicked when my weight went up by 3 kgs in the first month of my treatment. But my doctor reassured me that it is quite common as your appetite returns when anxiety decreases. Eventually, my weight stabilized, so please don't worry too much.

I read so many online forums about weight gain on SSRIs and got so scared of starting my prescription. Honestly, it is a possible side effect, but please don't stop taking them without asking your doctor. We are in this together, and mental health must come first.

Yes, some SSRIs can cause weight changes. It is best to consult your psychiatrist to discuss alternative options if it becomes a concern.

I gained a bit of weight too when I started my medication, mostly because I was craving sweets. I just switched to healthier snacks like roasted makhana and fruits, which really helped. Talk to your doc, they might adjust the dose or medicine if it bothers you.
