Do ppis cause weight gain?

I've been on PPIs for chronic acid reflux for over a year now, and I've noticed I've put on some weight that I can't seem to shake off. I'm wondering if my medication could be a factor. Do PPIs cause weight gain as a side effect?

Honestly, I didn't gain any weight when I was on PPIs for my stomach ulcer. Some of my friends said they felt a bit bloated, but that's mostly just water weight or gas, not actual fat. Don't worry too much about it.

I used to ignore my chronic acidity and just popped PPIs daily for years, which eventually messed up my digestion and caused unexpected weight gain due to poor nutrient absorption. Don't make the mistake of self-managing. Please get a proper stomach checkup done by a specialist.

I was researching this because my mother started gaining weight after taking pantoprazole. Some medical articles suggest that when PPIs reduce stomach acid, it can alter gut bacteria or improve appetite because you are no longer in pain, which might lead to mild weight gain.

If you are worried about weight gain, instead of spending money on expensive supplements or tests later, try to plan a simple, high-fiber Indian diet. PPIs can sometimes cause bloating, but managing your food budget with simple home-cooked meals will keep your health and wallet safe.

I also felt very bloated and heavy when taking acidity pills. I started drinking warm water with fennel (saunf) and cumin seeds after lunch, which naturally improved my digestion. Once my gut healed and I tapered off the PPIs with my doctor's help, my weight went back to normal.

I panicked completely when I saw my scale go up by 2 kgs after starting PPIs. But my doctor reassured me that it was just temporary bloating because the stomach environment was adjusting. True enough, after a couple of weeks, the bloat cleared up and my weight went right back to normal.

As someone with PCOS, I am always terrified of anything that might cause weight gain. When I had to take PPIs for a stomach issue, I monitored my weight daily. They didn't cause any direct weight gain for me, but they can cause mild water retention, so stay hydrated and don't panic.
