Do perms cause hair loss?

A few months after getting a perm, I've started noticing a lot more hair fall than usual. Is it possible that the perm is causing my hair loss?

They don't usually cause permanent hair loss from the roots, but they can definitely make your hair super dry and brittle! 🙈 I got one last year and had to deal with a lot of breakage. Just pamper your hair with extra conditioner and you should be fine!

I would be so terrified of getting a perm because of the chemicals. What if the solution burns the hair follicles and the hair never grows back? Please check if you already have thin hair or a sensitive scalp before deciding to go through with this.

With the amount of hair I lose just from daily work stress and lack of sleep, a perm would probably leave me bald in a week! Honestly, if your hair is already weak, putting those heavy chemicals on it is just inviting trouble.

According to my dermatologist, perms break the disulfide bonds in your hair shaft to reshape them, which inherently weakens the hair. It leads to hair breakage (shaft damage), not actual hair loss from the root, unless the chemical causes a severe scalp burn. He advised keeping a gap of at least six months between treatments.

If you do get a perm, make sure your diet is loaded with protein, iron, and biotin to help your hair recover. Eating soaked almonds, walnuts, and curry leaves daily will strengthen your roots from within, which helps minimize any damage caused by these styling chemicals.
