Do opioids cause weight gain?

I've been on opioid medication for a while now due to a recurring pain issue. Lately, I've noticed some unexpected weight gain and can't figure out why. Is it possible that opioids cause weight gain, or should I be looking at other factors for this?

Yes, they can cause some weight gain because they slow down your digestion. Don't worry too much, just keep drinking plenty of water and eating fresh fruits to stay light!

Yes, they do. They often slow down digestion and cause constipation, which leads to temporary weight gain and bloating.

Honestly, between my lack of sleep and these meds, my body has no idea what a normal metabolism is! They definitely cause bloating and water retention, which makes you feel like you've gained ten kilos overnight.

I totally get it, dealing with weight changes on top of managing chronic pain is so stressful and unfair. It's very common to gain weight due to slowed gut motility and fluid buildup. Please be gentle with yourself.

I went through the exact same thing last year after my surgery. They really slow your system down, making you feel super heavy. Eating light, home-cooked food and walking a bit helps a lot with the bloating.

I panicked so much when my weight shot up by 4 kgs after starting my prescription. But my doctor reassured me it was just water retention and slow digestion, not actual fat. It went away once my treatment ended, so relax!
