Do opiates cause weight gain?

Ever since I started taking opiates for my nerve pain, I've noticed that I'm slowly gaining weight, even though my eating habits haven't changed much. Can opiates cause weight gain as a side effect? I'm finding it very frustrating.

My physician explained that opiates can slow down the gastrointestinal tract, leading to severe constipation and water retention, which feels like weight gain. Additionally, they can alter metabolic rate and increase cravings for sweet foods. It is a known side effect of long-term use.

Weight changes while on heavy prescription medications should always be monitored. Please get your thyroid and kidney functions checked, as fluid retention can mimic weight gain. Always discuss these changes with your treating doctor to be safe.

Yes, they can cause some weight gain due to slowed metabolism and fluid retention. Please take care and discuss this with your doctor for advice.

Managing weight when your hormones or metabolism are affected is incredibly hard, as I know from my PCOS journey. While these medicines can slow down your digestion and cause bloating, it's best to consult your doctor for a safe plan rather than trying strict diets on your own.

Actually yaar, these meds make you super sluggish and constipated, which makes you feel heavy and bloated. It is mostly water weight and slow digestion. Try drinking more water and talk to your doc about it.
