Do calcium channel blockers cause weight gain?

My doctor recently prescribed me calcium channel blockers for my blood pressure. Since starting them, I've noticed a bit of weight gain, especially around my stomach. I'm wondering if this medication can actually cause weight gain.

I started taking these a month ago and my scales are showing 3 kgs more already. My feet also look a bit puffy. Has anyone else experienced this so quickly? It is making me feel really stressed out.

It is usually just fluid retention in the lower legs and ankles, not actual fat. A simple solution is to keep your feet elevated on a pillow while sleeping and reduce extra salt in your dinner. Of course, discuss this with your family doctor too.

Please don't worry too much. This is a known side effect for many people on these medications, and it can be managed easily. Just have a gentle chat with your doctor, they will guide you on the right steps.

Yes, peripheral edema is a documented side effect of calcium channel blockers, which can register as weight gain on the scale due to water retention. It is best to consult your cardiologist or physician; they can adjust the dosage or switch the drug class if necessary.

My mom had the exact same issue when her doctor put her on a calcium channel blocker. Her ankles bloated up, but once she spoke to her doctor, they changed the medicine and she went back to normal in a week. Just get it checked!
