Do breast cancer cause weight gain?

My neighbour was diagnosed with breast cancer a few months ago, and she seems to have put on a lot of weight since then. We were discussing if breast cancer itself can cause weight gain, or if it's related to the treatment.

In my aunt's personal experience, she actually gained weight during her treatment, but it was mostly due to the hormonal therapies and steroids she was prescribed, not the cancer itself.

I totally get it, navigating all these scary questions about cancer can be so overwhelming. Weight changes are very common during the treatment phase because of medication side effects, so please be kind to yourself.

My mother is going through chemotherapy and has started putting on weight around her stomach. Has anyone else noticed their family members gaining weight instead of losing it during breast cancer treatment?

At Tata Memorial where my relative was treated, the doctors explained that chemotherapy and steroid medications often cause fluid retention and weight gain. It is best to ask your oncologist clearly about managing these side effects.

Hormone blockers and steroids used in treatment can affect your metabolism and cause weight gain. If you are also managing blood sugar levels, you have to be extra careful with your diet during this time.
