Do braids cause hair loss?

My hair stylist told me that tight braids can actually cause hair loss over time. I love getting braids done, but now I'm worried. Do braids cause hair loss, especially if they are very tight or kept for long periods?

Yes, tight braids absolutely can. I ignored the pulling pain and ended up with traction alopecia, which took a year of dermatological treatment to fix. Please see a doctor if your scalp starts showing bald patches.

I really want to try braids but I am too scared of losing my hair. Is there a safe way to tie them loosely so they don't cause any damage?

They only cause hair loss if you pull them too tight at the roots. I wear braids all the time, but I always tell my stylist to keep the hairline area relaxed. Comfort should always come first.

I got so scared when I saw lots of hair fall after untying my braids. But my sister explained it was just the daily shed hair that was trapped inside the braids for days. It is totally normal, don't worry.

Actually, it's called traction alopecia, yaar. When you pull the hair too tight constantly, the follicles get damaged. Just keep them loose and give your scalp a break every few weeks.
