Do blood pressure pills cause weight gain?

For the past year, I've been on medication for high blood pressure, and I've found it very difficult to manage my weight. Can blood pressure pills actually cause weight gain? I'm trying to figure out what's causing it.

Yes, some older beta-blockers can slow down your metabolic rate slightly or make you feel a bit sluggish. But you can easily manage this by being a bit more active, keeping an eye on your daily calorie intake, and doing some strength training if your doctor permits. It's all about adjusting your routine.

While certain blood pressure medications like beta-blockers are clinically known to cause mild weight gain or water retention, modern medications like ACE inhibitors usually do not have this effect. It is highly recommended to consult your physician to understand which specific pill you are on and if it can be adjusted.

Oh, this is my biggest fear! I have been reading so many forums about BP pills causing sudden weight gain and it's making me so anxious to start my prescription. But please don't stop taking them on your own because high BP is much more dangerous. Maybe we can both talk to our doctors about finding a weight-neutral option?

I noticed a slight weight increase when I started my medication, but I started a daily 45-minute brisk walking habit which really helped keep my weight in check. Just check with your cardiologist first to see what level of physical exercise is safe for your heart, and then start slowly.

I absolutely freaked out when I gained 3 kgs in two weeks after starting my BP pills. I thought I was going to balloon up, but my doctor reassured me it was just mild fluid retention. We switched the salt, and the extra weight literally disappeared in a week. Don't worry, it's very manageable!
